Green River Lunker Don Brown, Vernal, Utah, knew exactly what he was after. Brown, a resident of Vernal, regularly tries for lunker Green River trout, using large Rapalas. Braving a full-blown blizzard, he found his tenacity rewarded when the 29 3/4 lb, 35-inch-long fish struck at approximately 10 p.m.

The brown trout almost certainly is the largest caught in the Green, more than 12 pounds larger than the biggest stocked by state biologists. The largest rainbow taken from the Green River weighed 23 pounds. Brown kept the trout for mounting.

"It's an incredible fish," said Guy Collett, an owner of nearby Flaming Gorge Lodge, who weighed the trout on a registered scale. "I've been here my whole life and a lot of us fish that same whole. Nobody ever dreamed something this big would come out."Click here to return to our home page.
